A King without a Kingdom
There lived an old king named Lear in England. He had three daughters, Regan, Goneril and Cordelia. Once he decided to divide his kingdom among three daughters. Rather childishly he proposed to divide his kingdom in proportion to declaration of love made by his daughters. The two elder daughters, Goneril and Regan enthusiastically showed their love, much to the satisfaction of the old and vain king. The youngest daughter Cordelia was loved most by King Lear. She was sincere, honest and lacked the hypocrisy of her elder sisters. She displayed her love simply and sincerely which was misunderstood by the arrogant king. In his foolishness the king divided his kingdom into two shares and allotted to Regan and Goneril, and decided to live with each of them by turns. He left Cordelia and cursed her. The king of France offered his love to Cordelia and took her as his wife.
The wicked daughters conspired against their father. Goneril and Regan treated their father with complete disrespect. The two sisters refused to accept King Lear. The old king was enraged and heart-broken. He walked out into the stormy night.
In the meantime the discord between the two sisters and their kingdom erupted. In addition there was also news of an army from France slowly making its way to England. On the deserted health, the old and weak king boldly faced the storm. By this time he was already mad and was brought to the refuge by a loyal servant Kent. He took the king towards France where help and friends waited for them.
In the meantime the Army of France landed on the shores of England where Cordelia learnt that her mad father was near the shore. She sent her man to search for the old king. He was soon brought in front of Cordelia. Tenderly, she brought him back to a resemblance of sanity. The two sisters jointly advanced to protect England against the invading French Army. In the battle that ensued, the French were defeated and Lear and Cordelia were taken to the prison. Meanwhile Cordelia was murdered. The broken-hearted King Lear was unable to see her innocent daughter's death and he too died in utter grief.

রাজা লীয়ার নামে ইংল্যান্ডে একজন বৃদ্ধ রাজা বাস করতেন। রিগ্যান, গনেরিল ও কর্ডেলিয়া নামে তার তিনজন কন্যা ছিল। একদা তিনি তার রাজ্যকে তিন কন্যার মধ্যে ভাগ করে দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন। শিশুর মতো তার প্রতি তার কন্যাদের ভালোবাসা প্রকাশের অনুপাতে তিনি তার রাজ্যভাগ করার প্রস্তাব করেন। তার বড় দুই কন্যা গনেরিল ও রিগ্যান আগ্রহের সহিত বৃদ্ধ ও অসার রাজার সন্তুষ্টির জন্য তাদের ভালোবাসা দেখাল। রাজা লীয়ার তার ছোট কন্যা কর্ডেলিয়াকে সবচেয়ে বেশি ভালোবাসতেন। সে ছিল অনুগত, সৎ এবং বড় বোনদের ন্যায় কপট ছিল না। সে তার বাবার প্রতি সরল ও অকৃত্রিম ভালোবাসা দেখাল যা উদ্ধত রাজা ভুল বুঝল। রাজা তার বোকামির ফলে তার রাজ্যকে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করেন এবং রিগ্যান ও কর্ডেলিয়াকে দেন এবং পর্যায়ক্রমে তাদের প্রত্যেকের কাছে থাকার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন। তিনি কর্ডেলিয়াকে ত্যাগ করেন এবং অভিশাপ দেন। ফ্রান্সের রাজা কর্ডেলিয়ার প্রতি তার ভালোবাসা প্রস্তাব করেন এবং তাকে স্ত্রী রূপে গ্রহণ করেন।
দুষ্ট কন্যাদ্বয় তাদের পিতার বিরুদ্ধে ষড়যন্ত্র করেছিল। গনেরিল ও রিগ্যান তাদের পিতার সাথে অসম্মান আচরণ করত। দুই বোন রাজা লীয়ারকে মেনে নিতে অস্বীকৃতি জানালো। বৃদ্ধ রাজা ক্রোধান্বিত হলো এবং তার হৃদয় ভেঙ্গে গেল। তিনি ঝড়ের রাতে বাইরে বেরিয়ে এলেন।
এরই মধ্যে দুই বোন ও তাদের রাজ্যের মধ্যে বিরোধ প্রকাশ পেল। উপরন্তু, ফ্রান্স থেকে একদল সৈন্যের খবর পাওয়া গেল যারা ইংল্যান্ডের পথে এগিয়ে আসছিল। ভগ্ন স্বাস্থ্যে, বৃদ্ধ দুর্বল রাজা সাহসের সাথে সঙ্কটের মুখোমুখি হন। এ সময় তিনি প্রায় উন্মাদ ছিলেন এবং একজন বিশ্বস্ত চাকর কেন্ট তার তত্ত্বাবধানে রাজাকে একটি আশ্রয়ে নিয়ে যান।
এরই মাঝে ফ্রান্সের সৈন্যদল ইংল্যান্ডের সমুদ্রতীরে অবতরণ করেন যেখানে কর্ডেলিয়া জানতে পারে যে তার পাগল বাবা সমুদ্রতীরের নিকটে। সে বৃদ্ধ রাজার খোঁজে লোক পাঠায়। দ্রুত তাকে কর্ডেলিয়ার সামনে উপস্থিত করা হয়। ধীরে ধীরে সে (কর্ডেলিয়া) তাকে এমন পর্যায়ে নিয়ে আসল যে তাকে দৃশ্যত সুস্থ মনে হলো।
দুই বোন একসাথে ইংল্যান্ড সুরক্ষার্থে ফ্রান্স সৈন্যবাহিনীর বিরুদ্ধে অগ্রসর হন। সেই যুদ্ধে ফ্রান্স পরাজিত হয়েছিল এবং লীয়ার এবং কর্ডেলিয়াকে কারাবন্দী করা হয়েছিল। এই সময় কর্ডেলিয়াকে হত্যা করা হয়। ভগ্ন হৃদয় রাজা লীয়ার তার নিষ্পাপ কন্যার মৃত্যু দেখতে অসমর্থ ছিলেন এবং তিনিও দুঃখে মারা যান।
